Upon being honorably discharged from the US Marines in 1961, John went on to pursue his first love, boxing. After engaging in 26 professional fights, he concluded there must be a better way to make a living. A chance meeting with a casting director at an Italian wedding reception changed his direction. From there, he embarked on a career consisting of many television appearances including Remington Steele, Barnaby Jones, Baa Baa Black Sheep, CHIPS, and Rockford Files. He appeared in movies such as Deal of the Century, The Late Show, The Long Goodbye, A Fine Mess, Three Women, There Was a Crooked Man, among others. In 1975, he rushed to the set of SHAZAM! on short notice to step into the boots of Captain Marvel. It is one of his favorite achievements as an actor, as he was able to speak to millions of children and young adults in their formative years. He retired from Hollywood in 1991, and currently enjoys country living with his wife, Linda, in the lower foothills of the Sierras, in Yuba County, California.
